Default 98 Accord 4cyl LX , poor fuel economy, lack of power

Hi guys, thought I'd throw this one out in the open and see what you guys think. My 98 Accord LX vtec (4cyl) gets pretty crappy mileage (500km/tank) on a 70 litre fuel tank. Also, seems a bit sluggish, lack of power. However, when I get down to the last 15-20 litres of gas in my tank the thing just hauls!! I'm leaning towards a bad fuel pressure regulator. It only has 110K on it. Fuel filter has never been changed, so I'll try that first.

First of all I would like to welcome you to HAF...

mmmm.. i did a bit of calculation and here are the results

first off the tank capacity is ,,,17.1 gall which = 64.7 liters and not 70 liters as you stated

second 500 k divided by 64.7 liter ( tank capacity ) = 7.72 liter

there are 3.785 liters in a gallon .. so if you multiply 7.72liter X 3.785= 29.22 mpg

so in conclusion your car is getting 29.22 miles per gallon .........I'd say that 's not bad at all

assuming i did all my math correctly

as for being sluggish , now,, that's another issue.have you done any tune up?? 98 accords have the filter in the fuel tank part of the fuel pump.. it is suppose to be a lifetime filter.. and honestly i'd be surprised if that turns out to be the problem

Hey there. Thought the tank was a bit larger, so I guess my fuel economy isn't all that bad. The main problem I have with it is the power issue. Not much power from full to 1/4 tank, but anything less than that it really wakes up. It's had a full tune up, excluding wires. Plugs, cap & rotor, air filter. The reason I'm guessing at the fuel pressure regulator is because it seems to be a fuel delivery issue. I've also done a fuel injection service at a local garage. Doesn't make sense that less fuel in my tank gives my car more power, alot more.

Thanks for the reply, and the welcome

150hp in lx and ex trims LX (for the I4) coupe is the lighest at 2997lbs and 150HP is not going to get you sports car performance. Fuel weighs in at approximately 6.5lbs/gal. so 12 gallson is about 78lbs = not much to be gained

Fuel delivery would be consistant unless it was a failing fuel pump...........

Not expecting sports car performance, just noting the huge difference in power when low on fuel, with or without an extra passenger. Has nothing to do with weight in this case. Perplexing...
