98 accord starting problems
hello forum, got a couple of issues and wanting to see if anyone has some helpful advice. i've got a '98 accord coupe that i recently installed a '02 2.3 v-tech engine & trans in. i used the ecm from the '02 engine and i can't get it to start, the green security key on the dash is flashing. so i put the original ecm back in and it started but when i drove it the check engine light came on and it also flashed the d4 light after it shifted into 2nd gear, after that it's real sluggish on the take off (slipping slightly) but after it catches up, drives ok. i realize the computer programs are different for the two years('98 & '02) and i know i need the '02 ecm to work properly but what is preventing it from starting with that ecm? is it possible that it's defective or is it something else i'm overlooking? i thought about checking to see if it's sending fuel through the rail & try to determine if it's working, but if the green security key is flashing then it must be reading something,i guess. any advice will be helpful thanks.

The key and ecu are programmed to "talk" to each other. So the ECU from the '02 does not know the key from the 98.....Can you get the key from the 02?
If not you'll need someone (dealer or some locksmiths) to program the '02 ECU to your key.

i can't get the key from the '02. so i guess ill start looking for a locksmith today. does the key have a special chip or something on it because the '98 key looks plain, like a regular key except its a factory black rubber key. thanks for your advice it was greatly appreciated.

Yes, the 98 has a chip in the key. The ECU has to programmed to the key. If you could get the key from the '02, some would just tape the key to the ECU tricking the ECU.
Might be hard to find a locksmith that has the needed tools ( $$$'s) needed to do the programing...but I've seen a few that advertise they can do it.
