98 needs transmission - sell and buy 03-04 used?
Hello all,
Longtime Accord owner, first time poster. I am the original owner of a '98 Accord LX , Auto tranny, 150,000 miles. In the last few years the car has averaged ~7,000 miles/year and about $1,500/year in various repair costs done at the dealership.
The tranny is slipping after accelerating from a full stop and the car is making a strange sound at idle; a mechanic told me it needs a new tranny. I'm afraid that the car is reaching its end of life and that other high-ticket repairs may come up if I fix it.
1) What's a reasonable selling price? The body has several small dents but the car is in otherwise good working condition.
2) I love the way the Accord drives and am considering buying an '03-'04 model but I'm concerned about the tranny issues that appear to be common. Should I buy a Camry instead, or are there any 'safe' Accord model years?

It's easy to learn.
When they went to the K-series (4-cyl) in 2003 the trans is completely different. I don't think those problems were inherited into the new trans.
I'm not sure, but I think the V-6 & it's trans was carried over.

What? A 98 Accord auto made 150k miles?
edmunds . com has a True Market Value [TMV] estimator that might help you price out the car.
But I'd be honest about the trans to the next buyer, and consider at least 1/2 the cost of replacement off of the estimated value of the car. like a negative $1,000

Thanks for the info. Looking at carcomplaints.com, the 2003 Accord has 374! transmission complaints, but ~95% of those seem to be for the V6 models.

Edmunds lists the private party value at $2,000-$3,000, so I'm considering listing it on Craigslist for ~$1500 or so.
Thanks again for your help!
