98 or so to 00 or so Accord transmissions ???
Hi all, glad to meet you(s),I'm new hereand am shopping for a 98-00 (how ever long that body style 00 was) Accord CoupeV-6 model automaticand thought I read somewhere that certain year Honda transmissions (sedan and coupe share the same?) had some problems and were recalled or had a service bulletin on them?
Can some one enlighten me and what the problems were and what years were effected ?
Was the coupe also available with a 4 cylinder motor ?
I now see there is a service bulletin section but don't understand what exactly was wrong with the trans.
My main concern is that I don't have any major cost down the roadwhen buying a used one and it holds up like a typical Honda is known for.
I'm looking at ones with 60-100,000 miles on so is there ANYTHING on these mosels I should really watch out for that may be a serious problem $$ wise in future ?
Thank You !

The 6th generation Accord (1998 - 2002) is the model you're talking about, throughout that generation the automatic transmissions had about a 50% chance of completely failing and requiring a new units. This affected both V6 and I4 models, even though they both have different automatic transmissions. This problem also affect early 2003 Accords as well. Honda had a class action lawsuit filed against them (I believe) and instead of recalling all of the transmissions they opted for a 93 month/109,000 mile from date of purchase extended warranty. Visit hondatransmissionsettlement.com for more info.
Yes, the coupe was available with the F23 I4 motor in both automatic and manual versions. The V6 was only available with an automatic until the 7th generation Accord (2003-2007), which made a 6 speed manual an option.
Other than the autotragic transmission failures, the only other thing I can think of that commonly goes wrong is an flaky ignition switch.
If you can, find a manual Accord and if you can't, learn to drive it. Well worth it.

I'll put this very mildly so you can understand;
You could not run fast enough, to give me the keys and title to a 98-02 Accord with an automatic trans.

Weird, same problemwith Odessey's and Acura TL's too!
The car isn't for me and the guy doesn't know how to drive stick but maybe I can teach him.
He didn't choose that car, I recommended the coupe because I find those yearsso nice looking, inside and out .
WHAT ABOUT THIS SOLUTION TO BUYIBG A AUTO ............. find him one that had a new trans put in, I saw saeveral of them today.
The new trans, are they updated so the problem never happens again ?
I know the ones on the Acura TL's, some still had problems after a new one was installed, more then likely same with these ?
Thanks guys, appeciate your replies back!!!!!!

I wouldn't go near any 98-03 Accord with an auto, no matter what. Most people say they've have new transmissions put in 3 times so far. If he wants an auto get up to a 97 or after an 03.

Damn, You guys got me concerned..... I have only had the car for 1 month now and
it is still running perfect. I am already worried about the timing belt as I dont know for sure
that it has been changed. And now your saying the trans may fail. Anybody had a good
experience (no problems) with this model. My trans fluid looks to be fresh.
Oh yeah the car has 130k on it.
