Default accord 90 delay in shifting when cold

hello friends, my second car accord 90, with mileage 258,000, 4cylinders, AT. I notice some weeks back it delays when shifting mostly when cold like in the morning and the rpm revs to more than 4000. It makes a whining sound as i drove off. But there is slight hard shift, could this problems be due to clutch pressure control solenoids A and B going bad or something else. I believe that not the full auto transmission need replacements or rebuilts. The D4 light is not blinking and i have changed the ATF. The car is entering its 4th year by january next year. It runs great on the highway except the delay in shifting when cold and the whining sound it makes. Hope to hear from you guys soon. Thanks.

There is a deliberate delay in upshifting on cold engine to assist warmup. Your description suggests yours is more than normal. You might try manual shifts to see if that enables earlier shifts. If so, the shift control solenoids are not the problem.

The hydraulic symptom chart has a number of possibilites for harsh shift and whining, however they are not problems remedied easily. Get a download manual from Online Manuals post in DIY forum to review chart.

Cold whining sound can be power steering leaking air on suction side at PS pump (inlet oring not sealing).

Unless problem is unbearable, living w/ it may be low cost option.

good luck

Since this is on a 1990, you may want to check the adjustment of the throttle/shift cable. That's the cable going from the throttle down to the transmission. If it's too tight, it'll shift later, and add to the delay because of being cold.
