Default auto problem 96 2.2 aerodeck

Hi
i have a 96 2.2 aerodeck with autobox and since yesterday have problems with transmission, when you put car in drive or reverse engine just revs and revs but no drive (if it was manual would say clutch slipping badly and worn out!) have no real experience of autos and worried its something expensive! Transmission oil levels seem Ok and fluid does not seem dirty and there are no warning lights on dash. Can anyone suggest any not too expensive remedies please :-)

Is the gear selection light (D1-D2-D3-D4, etc) changing position. If not, the gear selection switch may have malfunctioned, or the mechanical linkage connecting gear shift lever to autotrans is broken/disconnected. In any case, you may need some professional help.

good luck

Default autobox problem

Thanks for the reply, yeah the lights are changing with gear selection (D1-D2-D3-D4, etc) - so look slike a new autobox then have ben offered a transmission from a car with 42,000 mile son clock from scrap merchant for £175+vat plus £50 delivery - is it worth the risk do you think? How difficult is it to change the transmission is it a huge job or could any local garage do it?

It could still be a disconnected trans shift cable. I would inspect the cable at the transmission control lever and be sure the control lever is moving when you move the shifter. Cable could be disconnected at trans control lever, broken, or disconnected at console shift lever.

You may want to download the 94-97 Accord manual from Online Manuals DIY post of this site. This has all details you'll need.

Used trans price doesn't sound bad,...if it has a warranty for 3-6 months. You still would lose your labor if you get a dud. Installation in US runs about same as trans cost.

good luck

Default new developments

Thanks for all assistance so far.

The autobox problem seems to be associated with something overheating now! After car had been left for a while started it up and everything worked fine, forward and reverse drive everything OK - then about 2 minutes later same thing happened, drive totally gone with engine just revving and revving. left it for a day and tried again with exactly the same results.

looks like when cold autobox works fine but as soon as warmed up drive is lost totally (before total loss of drive it becomes intermittent for a little while then totally goes)

Is this a "good" development, does it suggest autobox is not completely goosed? is it worth trying one of those additives on ebay to stop autobox slippage?

Appreciate any advice given, thanks

Default leakage

I forgot to mention that there is also something leaking at the front of the car, only noticed as car has been sat in same spot for a while, the leak is coming from the very front of car at passenger side (UK car) so as you stand looking at car from front its on the RHS - could this be transmission related also?
Thanks

Tranny is on the right side of the car (drivers side in UK). So your leak might be a front crankshaft seal, or camshaft seal or something like that.

Clean it up real good so you can see where the oil is really coming from.

Default oil leak

Thanks Jim, so oil leak is nothing to do with current transmission problems then - any ideas on what might be causing the autobox problem?

I won't pretend to be an autobox guru. My solution is to buy only manual trannys.
