auto-tranny swap 4-cyl 2002 into 1998?
#2
F23A (without a number at the end) wasn't a USA engine.
F23A1 = VTEC = "basic" engine in 49-state Accord EX, probably LX
F23A5 = ULEV VTEC = cleaner exhaust for California emmissions rules
F23A4 = non-VTEC = cheaper engine, maybe Accord DX??
The non-VTEC engine is cheaper but less powerful. From one year to the next, I'm not sure which version Accord comes with each engine.
They're kinda interchangable, but there's issues. The VTEC engine has a couple extra things on the wiring harness & the ECU is different.
The ULEV engine (F23A5) has a LOT of changes in the ECU, wiring harness, sensors, etc. That one's not easy to swap.

I went to car-part [dot] com and looked up a part for a 98 transmission.
It only asked if it was a 2.3 automatic and didn't ask for LX/DX/EX like it would for the engine. It looks like they have the same transmission.
Look for the number stamped on the two transmissions. If they are the same, then you are good to go.

On the 94-97 accords, the first four digits (BAXA) are the transmission number. The rest are the serial number that is unique to each transmission.
My guess is that your 98 is the same. So they should be able to be swapped without any other modifications.
This info would be in a 98 shop manual which you can download from the online manuals link in the diy section. Its an .iso file, so you have to burn it to a CD for it to work. If you are doing a swap, you should have a shop manual to help you.
