Default axle leak

Got it up on a lift in gear and left axle was spinning and right was wobbling excentrically. Definitely leaking around both axles. My mechanic said that bearings just under the seals were likely damaged which may have caused the leak in the first place. He was not sure how much work would be involved to repair. Any recommendations? Larry

My understanding is the differential seals are not hard to replace w/ the axle removed. I have never done this job, so hopefully someone who has will chime in.

good luck

If the axle can visibly wobble, then it goes beyond the seals. Need to replace the bearings that hold the axle.

Leaking axle seals, possibly caused by worn out carrier bearings, AND the trans is slipping...the trans isn't worth repairing. The labor to crack the case and replace the carrier bearings would be very expensive. A good, used trans would be cheaper but, as Texas Honda pointed out, getting a good used trans is a crap shoot for a 6th gen car. The car might be salvaged by buying a used trans from a salvage yard - with a guarantee - and doing the labor yourself. If you're paying someone else to swap the trans then you're probably exceeding what the car is worth, considering that a salvage yard would pay you $300 or $400 for the car as is.
