Default Can anyone tell me what this is?

What is this metallic mesh cover on the exhaust system preceding the catalytic converter? If it is damaged, could it leak and trip up the o2 sensor or ruin the catalytic converter? I'm replacing my cat and want to address any other exhaust problems while i'm at it.

Thanks,

Is that some kind of Accord? What year? What engine?

That braided sleeve covers up a corrugated flex joint. I think it's upstream of the catalytic converter. Sometimes it's part of the "A-pipe". Yes, it can leak but most likely won't ruin the cat.

Yes, it is upstream of the cat. The picture is from an early 90s accord, mine is on a 1999 4 cylinder accord and is separated at one of the far edges. Should this be replaced? Could it throw off an o2 sensor reading?

It could cause bad O2 sensor readings and false Check Engine Light settings. It should be replaced. Not too bad a job, but it's all underneath the car if you diy. Use good jackstands securely supporting the car.

good luck

For a 1999 Accord LX 4-door auto-trans...

It's the "A-pipe" and it's shown as #7 in the picture.
