Have you checked for error codes?

I have only owned manuals, so I don't have a bunch of AT experience.

Does the transmission shift through all 4 gears? Is the problem when the torque converter doesn't lockup? There is a set of lockup solenoids that you may want to clean using some throttle body cleaner.

How do you know it's not shifting into overdrive?

If torque converter solenoid is bad, ECU sets a code for faulty LU solenoid circuit. If torque converter lockup hydraulic circuit is bad, code P0740 is set by the ECU monitoring engine speed vs. main shaft speed and observing slippage (no lockup). P0740 will set soon after car reaches 55 mph and car is mildly accelerated at speed w/o downshift.

I'm very familiar w/ P0740 on a 97 Acura TL w/ a hydraulic system fault which disables the torque converter LU.

Proper torque converter lockup can be observed when cruising flat ground and accelerating slowliy. When LU occurs the rpm will fall betwee 150-250 rpm. Also, w/ speed control set the rpm will hold very steady unless trans downshifts on a steep slope. Upslope/downslope rpm is almost constant w/ LU engaged.

good luck

newbie here, but I just fixed my issue by replacing the thermostat. From what I know, the overdrive is controlled by temperature, meaning it has to reach the normal operating temp. Mine only worked in the summer and never reached operating temp in winter. Replaced thermostat, heat is now awesome and overdrive works. Not sure if this relates to your issue....

i heard the same thing about the coolant thing, so i fixed the coolant temp sensor...and that didnt fix it. could low trans fluid be a possibility?

You ALWAYS want to check to make sure your trans fluid is OK.

Coolant temp sensor isn't the same thing as thermostat. If the T-stat is bad, then replacing the sensor won't help.
- T-stat makes the engine run at the proper temperature
- sensor simply measures the temperature

What does it show on the temp gauge on the dash though? My heat blew hot, but until it hit that magical normal temp mark on the gauge, no OD. Again, just my 2 cents.
