Default CAT Heat shield

I had an oil change done Saturday and while it was in, the tech noticed a problem with the heat shield on the cat. converter. Their price was $185! I researched the parts (upper & lower heat shields) and they came to ~ $50. Does anyone know how difficult it is to change these? Do you have to lower the whole exhaust? Can this be done by slipping the old one off and replacing it with the new one, without moving the pipes? Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

What was the actual problem with the shields.

Lots of people just remove them & leave them off. Gotta be careful not to park on dry leaves, so it doesn't start a fire.

Heatshields mounting bolts can rust off. But if you want to DIY, you could even go around the shield with a big hose clamp.

just either remove old bolts and put in new ones, and if the whole shield is gone, just remove, fabricating a new one is easy too

Sounds like they were just trying to make some $$$ off me! It does rattle a bit, however, I've learned to live with it. Perhaps I'll try the hose clamp idea. Thanks for the input!
