Its pretty simple. Disconnect the battery. Remove two wires going to starter. Two bolts hold the starter to the engine. You might want to jack up the car to get to the bottom one. Once you remove the two bolts, you can pull the starter out of the car. I had to move the radiator hose and unplug a coolant temp sensor (green plug) to get enough room to remove the starter.

i wonder why service guys cherges 600-800 just for this then?!
the problem now is whether to get brand new motor or 2nd hand motor
is brand new, better to get genuine Honda or just after market. if 2nd hand, how would i know that the 1 i'm looking is still in good condition?

Just buy a remanufactured one. No sense in spending "Honda" money on that part and no sense in putting in a used one that you don't know how long it will last.

If you do go second hand look at the teeth on the cog of the starter and make sure there not all chewed up. Also a lot of parts stores will test a starter for free. Just make sure that who ever you buy it from that if it fails the test you will want a refund.

Usually starter motor is fine, and the solenoid contacts have worn out. They are replaceable on 94-97 starters. I've done several and it's an easy job. If you're starter was "clicking" when you try to engage starter, this is the problem. Contacts are available from sherco auto supply and other sources, including ebay.

good luck

If you can hear the starter CLICK but it doesn't crank then it means the contacts are worn down; they are very easy to change and about $15 for the set.
