Check Engine Light
I have a 2001 Accord EX v6 and the other day I was driving around and made a stop and turned the car off. Started the car 15 mins later and within 5 seconds the check engine light came on. Everything appears to be working OK. I do hear a kind of air hissing when I turn the car off. Is very noticable when engine is off, I turn the key to ACC wait around 3 seconds and turn key to off. After doing this 4 times the hissing gets quiter and then no more. If I start the engine and repeat this process the hissing comes back. ????? Anyone run into this before? I have read some articles about ERG valuve and it being under a recall or warrenty? I have 62k miles.

RE: Check Engine Light
Go to AutoZone or someplace like that, have them read the error code that set off your check-engine light. Get the actual code number, because sometimes their explanations can be pretty creative. Post back with the code & probably someone can give you more specific help.
Open the hood & try to pinpoint the location of the hissing. Sounds like a vacuum leak, but normally that doesn't last more that a couple seconds after shutting off the car. Brake booster maybe??

RE: Check Engine Light
I have found that the engine error code is a 401. The tech said is was a EGR insufficent flow code. He mentioned that the Accord is programed to issuse this code once you reach a certain mileage and is meant to indicate the engine needs some sort of cleaning. He reset the code and the check engine light is out. Has anyone heard of this engine cleaning threshold? Is there another reason for this 401 code?

LMFAO...being from a honda dealership i love to hear stories of what aftermarket shops say..he was right in the egr though..honda has an egr update that should cover your car..if not is all you have to do is remove your intake manifold and drill out a hole then replace your egr valve and clean out the intake manifold..but as i said it should be covered....

RE: Check Engine Light
I just did the egr fix on my car, '99 V6. I didn't install the kit. I just cleaned the port. I did not replace the EGR valve.
I wonder now if I should have replaced it.
FYI - The service bulletin for the fix is on this link.

RE: Check Engine Light
I contacted the original dealer and told them I had the 401 code. They told me there were 3 recalls related to this code so I am taking the car in next week for repair at no cost. Ironically I called another Honda dealer closer to my home and they said Honda would pay for part of the resolution to the problem but not the full cost, I would have to pay around $100.00 and they never mentioned there were 3 recalls.

RE: Check Engine Light
Good news all what you need is to removed the EGR valve and with a small hose place it in the orefice on the right side if you where lind on the car driver side try to blow some air in it if no air go in you have the line cloged all what you have to do is to remove the imput port and clean it with some carborator cleaner get some you will need three can of spray there is no special tool or drilling in there just a small flat screwdriver that all remember not loose any screw or nuts bolts it will take you at least 3 hours you will have fun when you are done $403.00 in your packet not to the mechanic boys. Plus you have to loose the EGR port so all of contaminant of the carborator liquid draing out or use a small vacuum tubin. when you done putting all together you have to try to turn the car 4 times don't be alert it will turn on all that wired noised in the engine will be gone and be like the way it was before smooth.;;; your spending is only $30.00 on the spray in the auto parts or $5.00 at 99cent store.thats all how that haaa...
Before anyone buy the EGR check the port if is clear the EGR is not the problem at all.
Rent or get loan tool from any auto parts to see what it is if this is P0401 code do as I mentioned aboved that all...
DON'T USED THE SHIP GAS THIS IS WHY IT MAKE IT CLOG...
pss pass it along to all 99% fix
I did it so you will..
