[/align] need to stop crankshaft from turning [/align] [hr] hi all! I used the 'search' function but had no luck, so here's my appeal for help: I have a 93 Accord s/w auto and need to replace timing belt etc. As suggested in various manuals and forums, I've tried using a screwdriver wedged into the flywheel teeth to stop the crankshaft from turning while (trying) to remove the crankshaft pulley bolt. Repeatedly.... NO GO!
So, does anyone have additional or alternate solutions to keep the crank from turning? (I am aware of the 'special' tool used at Honda but at this point that isn't really feasible...am looking for alternative).
In an attempt to get a variety of answers I did post this question on a couple different site forums so please don't take offense...

If I were you, I would take the easy route and take to to a shop and let them put a high torque(500 ft lbs or more) air wrench on it and break it loose for you. then you get them to put it back on (but not too tight) and carefully drive it home. Most shops will probably do it either for free or for like $20.

And even if they insist on tightening it to specified torque, you'll still be able to loosen it pretty easily. If it were me doing this instead of you, after getting home from the shop where it was loosend and re-tightened, I'd put the shortest breaker-bar+socket on it that I could find and strike the handle end with a hammer (to rotate the bolt counter-clockwise, of course). Because it was just tightened a few minutes ago, it should break free on the first blow.

^ It should be easier, but not easy. If you tighten a lug nut to 80 ft. lbs. and then try to take it off it certainly takes quite a bit of force, but you don't have to break the bond from corrosion. Good luck! You probably wont get too far if you dont use something to hold the crank pulley in place while you work on the bolt. They make a tool for it, but I've found a chain wrench works good, but be careful that the chain doesn't chew up the pulley, which will then chew through belts.
