Default cruise control-need help

I am on the highwayand turn the button for the cruyise control on and then set the speed. the light comes on, but the car does not hold speed at all and then when I go to accelerate back up to speed the tranny downshifts. It will shift back up once i hit the cancel button for the cruise control. what is wrong with this thing?

sounds like your control box is working then. theres a strong possibility that it has something to do with your actuator. its vacuum operated so there may be a hose disconnected or leaking. there are two hoses one fat one and one skinny one. the skinny one should have vacuum on it even when the car is off. unplug it and you should hear it hiss, if you dont you know your on to something. also, the actuator has a cable coming off of it, if the cable is broken or the diaphram in the actuator is broken it wont pull on the throttle body to keep the cars speed.

also along with lightshow suggestion, look under the hood at axtuator make sure it is plugged in,, i have sen people do t-belts and such and forget to reconnect the cruise plug,,,,,,also try somethig,, when you set the cruise try with your foot to pull up on the brake pedal see if that makes any difference or if it is a manual tranny pull up on the clutch pedal , again set cruise button, put your foot under trhe pedal and pull up on it with your foot ,, I have seen on occasions the switch misadjusted or the rubber stopper at pedal be worn and cause cruise not to engage ..
