Default Dead Alternator

My alternator went on my car today. I pulled it and borrowed my friend's 85 MR2 (which is a blast to drive) and took it to an O'Reillys. Their bench test came up as failed.

Does anyone have any comments about the quality of the rebuilt ones from the auto parts stores sell?

Re-manufactured Units are all around $100

Ultimata @ O'Reillys
Worldwide @ Advance Autoparts
Durlast @ AutoZone
Raybestos @ Napa

There is a electrical shop in town that will rebuild it for ~$150.

I will inspect the alternator when I get home. I suspect the brushes are bad, but I don't know if the local dealership will have them.

I'm leaning towards the electrical shop rebuild, but I have always had good luck with O'Reillys parts too. I probably won't buy on from Autozone, because I think that they sell the same thing as the others. Just wanted your thoughts on the re-manufactured ones.

i like DENSO alternators but they cost a bit more.. if you do all the replacement yourself i would get an alternator that gives a lifetime warranty or the longest warranty you can get

if you have to pay someone to do the job spend the extra dollars and get a DENSO .

All the companies you meantioned have those in lifetime warrantys, so no matter who you get it from it will have LLT warranty unless you get cheap and buy a $68.00 one yers warranty instead...

Well, I went the cheap route and drove to a U-Pull-It place and got a working alternator for $15. The car is up and running again.

If I run into problems later, I will order a Denso like DesertHonda suggested.

Thanks.
