Happy Easter everyone, It look's like I lost the battle with my V-Tec. After numerous flushes with dawn { dish soap } and water, I'm still getting oil in cooling system. Head was checked for crack's and machined, so I have to assume it has a cracked block.I've located a 50k engine for five bill's, thought that was a good price, but I'm unable to do that job in my driveway, so another hole in my wallet to install. This car was totaled but cluster was intact so I could verify mile's, hope it's a good engine ! as I now have more $$ in it than it's probably worth. I'll Keep all that helped posted as to final result's. Thank's to all. Shooter 58

Be sure to look for a sticker for odometer replacement. By law in many states it is required if the speedo head was replaced. The engine could have 300k on it but the speedo can read less. I find a good way to judge is to look at the pedals for wear. If they seem like they have more wear then you would expect for a car with 50k then verify there is no speedo head replacement sticker someplace or do a car check by running the VIN and see if anything pops up. Good luck.

True story...

I leased a new 1995 VW Passat GLX on a 48 month/60,000 mile lease; 18,000 miles into the lease the LCD portion of the instrument panel started losing pixels. I took the car in for a warranty repair, and the dealership put a new 1996 version of the instrument panel in the car, and duly noted the swap via a New Jersey sticker on the door pillar.

The thing about the 1996 version of the panel was there was a known issue when the car would be used to jump start another car via jumper-cables, the instrument cluster would gradually fail over the next few weeks. Not knowing the root cause of the issue, I drove normally for the next three years or so and then one fateful day, a coworker needed a jump start. Within a few weeks the pixels were dropping out so I went to my dealership and asked for another cluster replacement due to the "known issue of the 1996 clusters".

The dealership service manager simply laughed at me and told me my car was a 1995 and as such, was not covered by the extended warranty on the 1996s. The repair was upwards of $1,500, "When would I like to schedule my car in for the repair?"

Ummm, yeah, about that. Given the car had well over 120,000 miles on it (just over 100,000 miles still barely visible on the panel plus the original 18,000), and given I had something like four months to go before lease end, I decided since I had given them a shot to "do the right thing" (which would have meant something like $5,000 in excess mileage charges), I resorted to "Plan-B".

I found a local independent VW specialist and had him replace the instrument cluster for $750, but only after every display and gauge, speedometer and odometer included, had gone dead. Given there was no display from which to record the new mileage, the second door jam sticker reported 0.0 miles.

Plan B also included informing my sales person the 1999 Passat GLX I he had given me a quote on was not going to be ordered, a new 1999 BMW 328i ended up in my garage instead. When I returned the Passat at lease end, the odometer showed 18.2 miles; the dealership missed entirely the stickers on the door, and recorded 18.2 miles on the paperwork. VW Credit called me no fewer than three times practically begging me to give them an estimate to the mileage on the car. Since I truly didn't know, I refused to make a statement one way or another.

The good news was the car was in immaculate condition and could easily have passed for a car with 60,000 miles on it; the bad news (for the next owner at least), was significant number of miles on the car.
