Disappointing Mpg on 2010 Accord Coupe EX-L
Hey all. I'm curious if other Accord Coupe owners are experiencing the same mediocre Mpg as I am with my car. I purchased a Honda-certified used 2010 Accord Coupe EX-L (4 cylinder, auto) a few weeks ago. My driving is approx. 80% highway 20% city. I traded in my 2002 Civic, which was averaging 33 mpg, and I was hoping to average at least 28 mpg from the Accord since I'm practically all highway driving. Every time I fill up and calculate, I'm getting 23-25 mpg.
A bit about the car: it about 28,000 miles on it. Tires are relatively new, and I keep them close to max psi. My driving style and routes have not changed between the Civic and Accord. I put about 76 miles on my car a day going to/from work, and about 62 of those miles are highway. I keep cruise control at 70 pretty much the whole way. There aren't very many hills. Haven't used A/C. Don't accelerate like a maniac. Because the Accord is bigger, heavier and has a stronger engine, I expected a lower mpg than my Civic, but not 10 mpg less... especially since my car is rated at 31 mpg highway.
Should I be disappointed?

You're car savy; no explanation here, a thought only:
a few yrs ago I did a calculation on fuel economy vs ambient temp for a Nissan Altima, 2.4 L, 5 spd. based on my fuel records. Found a surprisingly strong drop with temps as moved from 80's to 40's to 20's; I might try to find the chart eventually, but it went from ~33 to 24-5 mpg or so in similar driving.
no guess on accord vs. civic. Luck.

Here's a thought, Around here, (I'm in Western NY) there is a "Winter" formulation for fuel. I always lose 2-3 MPG during the winter, with it getting back up to normal around mid to late April when the formula goes back to normal.
Right now I am getting 23-26mph whereas in the summer I get 27-28 if I keep the speedometer under 75.
Perhaps you are getting a bigger hit with the winter fuel and the new car.

I appreciate the suggestions and ideas. I never heard of a "winter" formulation for gasoline. But now that I think about it, I was getting a couple Mpg less during the cold winter months with my Civic. During the summer, fill ups would result in 33-34 mpg, but the couple weeks before I traded in at the end of December, I was getting around 31 mpg. And that was with a 10-year-old car with 218,000 miles on it and original engine and manual transmission.
Like I said, it's not a deal breaker. I love the Accord. It's was just slightly disappointing. I usually put about 425 miles on my car per week. With the Civic, I was filling up 5 times a month at about $40 per fill up ($200). With the Accord and its larger tank, I'm filling up once a week at $60 per fill up ($240), so I'm really only spending 40 bucks more per month on gas. Still, I'm a bit **** when it comes to performance and expectations.
