Default Engine Blown (2007 UK diesel), advice please ??

Hi,

First post so go easy, i have searched on the forum but cannot find what i am looking for.

4 weeks ago my 2007 Diesel Accord came up with a red light and low oil pressure warning while doing around 70mph on the motorway, i got to the slow lane and stopped in about half a mile. Checked oil and half full on dipstick. Note the car had been sounding a little noisier for a couple of weeks previous but nothing really bad (the noise was not really constant but when ticking over there was a slightly louder noise every couple of seconds then it would fade for a couple of seconds).

Anyway .. the AA towed me back to the Honda garage who promptly started the car and drove it around the back after i told them what was wrong with it !!!

A week later i had a call from the lease company who said that the car had an over rev fault at 5500 rpm while doing 75mph when it failed. They are saying that i changed down to 2nd gear at 75mph which is rubbish as i was cruising at 75, why would i need to change gear ? my questions are

1. Can they tell if this overrev and 75mph were logged at the time of the fault or are these just common alarms over the past few weeks / months which they have tried to attribute to the engine failure ?

2. Is 5500 rpm gong to damage an engine ?!

3. They also are now saing that there was no oil in the car even though it was half full, surely low oil pressure would be logged on the computer ?

It seems to me that the dealer are trying to get out of paying for repairs and its slowly slipping my way, the cost that are being talked about are

Honda replaces the complete engine .. get this .. £13,000 !!!

Lease companys specialist engine company rebuilds the engine £4,000 but no guarantee of fixing it.

Same company replaces the engine £8,000.

I have no intention of paying any of the above and need to know a bit more about how they log the faults.

I should also mention that they have told me the chain to the oil pump has snapped causing catastrophic failure to the engine.

I think my next step would be an independant specialist who can survey the car and access the computer etc, any one know where to find such a person ?

Thanks

Martin

I don't really know the answers, but for us here in USA, we never got the diesel in any case. I changed the thread title to attract the attention of our UK members.

The petrol engine wouldn't even blink at 5500 rpm...

From a search on the internet, the 2007 Accord diesel is probably closer to the engine of the 4 cylinder 7th gen Accords. It most likely is the turbo 4 cylinder diesel, which we don't have over here in the States (turbo or diesel).

My guess is this not related to any overrev of the engine. 5500 rpm is usually nothing for newer Honda engines. Many Honda engine designs were raced-inspired from race engines that rev far higher. The car has a rev limiter.

It may be due to timing chain stretched due to infrequent oil change or low oil level due to oil consumption. (This does occur on Acura/Honda 4 cylinders in the States.) I kind of doubt the chain actually broke though. It also may be that since it is a turbo, the motor oil needed more frequent changes?

You stated that a red light and low oil pressure warning came on, so there may be trouble codes stored related to some sensors too.

Just my take, take with a grain of salt....

Default Diesel timing chain problems

I have a similar tail from my 05 Accord tourer diesel, at around 90000 my main Honda dealer spotted a faulty exhaust manifold and replaced it under an extended warranty. On returning the car they left a note saying "timing Chain noisy" before I could find out more the next day the oil pressure light came on and stayed on.
Plenty of oil on the dipstick so must be a pressure fault I am thinking, when I had the car recovered to the dealer they said that it looked like a failed oil pump drive caused by the loose timing chain.
Other threads on this forum discuss an extended warranty on the timing chain and my car was certainly valid for this rework.
The outcome was surprising, Honda agreed to a new engine and turbo, on a six year old 90k car as an extended warranty, since the timing chain rework had been overlooked.

So if your timing chain is noisy, press for replacement under warranty with the notified kit.

If your engine lets go prematurely, keep pressing for good will from Honda to fix it outside of warranty

90k cars by Honda should not go bang, don't take no for an answer.
