he should have checked the block for warpage ,, using a straight edge and feeler gauge , it is a common thing to do after you clean the block of the head gasket that sticks on it..after a car has blown the head gasket
And it is very ,very rare that the block gets warped ,I have seen many , many car overheat, warp the head so badly that needs to be replaced and the block did not have any damage at all..
I agree with the Hondadude , machine shop should have checked the head for cracks if they did not do it , have the machine shop chk the head for cracks ,, ( machine shop should have done that as well )
Did you mechanic use Honda factory head gasket??
To have the block milled, the whole engine needs to be removed and sent to a machine shop and if you go that far you might as well have the engine rebuilt ..or replace it with a low miles japanese engine ,, they usually have between 40-50k miles
As for what turbodave said , once coolant gets in the oil , you can count the bearings out ... NOT TRUE ..I have done probably hundreds of head gaskets blown and never once did i replace bearings because coolant got in the oil ,
When an engine overheats real bad , you might get what we call ( piston rings bake) and you might use some oil ,,
At this point you are stuck in the middle , you have already paid the mechanic for the work he did , So getting a low miles japanese engine might not be your best choise..but i would still chk all of your options
I would reccomend that your mechanic pulls the head off, sends it back to the maching shop to be tested for cracks,, and have him chk for warpage on the top side of the block ( where the head bolts) if warpage is over .005 in.. block needs to be milled ..Also did they measure the head to make sure that after machining , it did not go below minimum specs?? ..

RE: Engine Gurus please respond.
Ok engine gurus, honda specialist. Mechanic called today. Block was inspected at machine shop....cracked block!!! How does that happen to an accord??? Bone stock EX with all major work done, new radiator, hoses, timing belt water pump, thermostat, etc. Yes it has 156,000 miles , but crack the block??? All work done at Arrowhead Honda in Arizona so I can assume the work was done right. I bought the car with 139,000 miles. All oil changes done at arrowhead honda. So I put on 16K and crack a block?? Can someone explain that one? Not a big Honda Fan right now. Going to go look at new cars right now.

RE: Engine Gurus please respond.
I'm not exactly a honda specialist but my first point to make is how was the car treated. who was the previous owner and how was it treated then. I've been around many chevy small blocks and have seen major block damage caused by abuse. one block i saw out of a firebird fell over sitting on the ground and a huge chunk just cracked right off, that's not normal. I've also seen rods break and punch holes through the oil pan. this was all caused by maximum horsepower racing abuse. not daily driving. either something was fixed incorrectly and there was too much heat and or that car was abused. I've heard of these hondas go for near 300k miles even one 500k. you're in arizona so i'm assuming heat would be a huge issue. heat and heatsoak can cause problems. If you drive a car hard or even normal in that heat and then just turn it off in your driveway the blocks going to just heatup. an engine can actually reach dangerous temps when turned off. the circulation stops because the water pump isn't going. this may have been the problem that may have built up to this.
good luck with what you do.
