Default Engine Light Off 350+ Per Tank/On and Only 280

Hi There -

I'm not an engine buff so could definitely use some assistance diagnosing an issue with my Honda Accord EX - 1998 (4 cyl - 2.3 Liter).

Periodically, and very abruptly the engine light will turn on and off. This will happen over the course of a few months. When the engine light is off I get 350+ miles per tank. When the engine light is on I get only 280 per tank.

Most recently when the engine light came back on the engine also began showings signs of struggle. For instance, when the engine is cold and I accelerate from a stop it feels as if fuel isn't getting to the engine. So it will briefly accelerate but slow down. I quickly ease off the accelerator and press again to reengage. I do this 3-4 times while trying to get up to desired speeds.

Any tips I can take back to my mechanic to as of date has not been able to resolve this issue.

Thanks so much!
JB

You can go to someplace like AutoZone and they will hook up a scanner & read the stored error message. It's literally hundreds of different things that MIGHT cause the check-engine light to come on. The error number will help us figure it out.

Get the actual error code number, it's like P1234. Sometimes the guy's verbal description can be pretty creative, so make sure you get the number & post it back here.
