After I drive my car for an hour or so on the interstate, the engine temperature guage will spike to hot for a minute or so then come off. I was wondering if this sounds like a problem with the guage, the thermostat or a cooling fan. From what I can tell, the car does not seem to be overheating so i was thinking it might be the guage.

I was having a problem for a while where the temp would spike up then drop down every now and then.

I replaced the thermostat and it fixed the problem.

 

If temp change is very rapid, say < 5 secs to rise, and similar return to normal, the guage or sensor is suspect.

If rise is gradual over say 20-30 secs and fall similar, then thermostat would be likely.
