Front axle replacement

Front axle replacement
Need to replace a front axle on an '87 accord.
Anyone have trouble with the transmission seal leaking after installation?
A tutorial I saw explained in detail the replacement but, did not address the seal replacement or if it is a concern?
Did not want to replace the unit and button it up and then have to remove everything again.

Thanks

RE: Front axle replacement
while you're doing it you might as well replace the seal (I don't think they are to expensive) however, I have done axles before and not replaced the seal and I didn't have a problem but it is much safer to do them at the same time.... sooo how big of a risk taker are you?

If it's not leaking I would't replace it. Be careful not to nick it going in and out with the axle.

RE: Front axle replacement
Did the passenger axle replacement a couple of weeks ago on an '87 accord A/T.
All went well.
Only caution is the lower wishbone bolt. It may be of value to loosen the nut , (17mm),slightly andthen check the bolt tosee if it will turn, (loosen) so it can be removed. Ifthe bolt cannot be turned - it may be necessary to use a means not normally available to the amateur, curb-stone mechanic, (torch - press - etc).
Thanks again for everyones input.

whoa wait a minute, if the lower wishbone bolt won't come loose just remove the inner boot large band clamp and catch all the grease as you slide the joint apart; the bearings might fall out as well, just take note of the way they are on the 'pegs'.
If you do get the lower wishbone bolt out; forethought will have you smearing grease on it when you put it back in.
Then you can get the axle out thru the wishbone.
As far as the axle seals be careful not to nick/gouge them, carefully guide the joint thru on re-assy. I usually fill the sealgroove with dow corning 111 silicone grease.

Agree -however,installation of a trialaxle, without the removal of the wishbone bolt, was difficult withoutremoving the inner boot band AND sliding the large end of the boot off to allow the inner CVhousing to slide through the wishbone.
