Default Fumes

Hello all! My first post so here it goes. I just purchased a 95 accord V6 and overall it was a good buy. One of my issues is strong exaust fumes from time to time and I need to know where to look to get rid of them.
Two codes came up when I purchased the car so I got it alittle cheaper than the previous owner wanted. One of the codes is an O2 sensor and the other was a purge valve malfunction. I also just discovered today that the previous owner removed the catylic converter so I'm wondering if that could be the problem. I'm a decient mechanic but need to get familar with the HONDA's. My first Honda but definitely not my last!!! Help me out guys!

Put a new converter back on before you get stopped in an e-check and get a pretty hefty fine for not having one on your car..

It will set an O2 code for not having a cat (unless you trick the sensor) and it will also run richer that's why you smell the fumes.

the cat is surely giving you the smell. the evap purge valve will give you a fuel/exhaust smell as well

however the rear o2 sensor does not control fuel/air ratios. it is only there to tell if the cat is doing its job. so it will not give you a rich mixture
