Default Gear grind in 5th when cold

I have a 2000 EX with 5 speed manual. In the mornings, I experience gear grind, going into 5th, until it warms up. Once the car has warmed up, no problem. Honda says it's the clutch, but I believe it's a syncro. IMO, if it was the clutch, it would continue to grind even after it warms up and I would expect to have some grinding in other gears also. Am I right?

I guess it's possible for a clutch to drag a bit when it's cold then work better when it warms up.

But the fact that it's only in 5th gear points to the transmission/synchro.

Thanks Jim, that's what I thought, but I wanted to run it by the experts!

I've used GM Synchromesh to treat notchy/noisy shifting in a couple of my vehicles. The friction-modified stuff. The fifth gear syncho tends to wear out first since it's the smallest.

Did the GM G/B oil fix the problem?

I'd also guess syncro. I tried GM syncro mesh in my transmission with a 5th gear grind and it didn't help, but mine was a lot worse than yours.

Worth a shot in my opinion.

I'm behind the times. GM Synchromesh is now branded AC-Delco Synchromesh, P/N 10-4014.

How many miles on your transmission? I had the same problem, replaced the transmission fluid and it cleared right up.

Also labeled as Pennzoil Synchromesh at auto-parts stores. Is that the same stuff?

I'm now just crossing the 175K mile mark.
