hello... i have 1988 honda accord manual 5 speed... i have just recently started having problems with the shifter... the gears shift easily when start up but after driving a few min the gears become difficult to shift...sometimes it gets stuck in a gear.... any ideas?

 

sounds to me you are beginning to have internal clutch issues,,,,,,,,,pressure plate //

 

this doesn't sound like anything to do with the tranny does it?

 

absolutely if your clutch doesnt separate from the flywheel it will be almost impossible to change gears. could be the clutch, or it could be a leak if you have a hydro clutch system. you def have a clutch problem

Lightshow my man,,, it is a 1988 , it has a clutch cable , not hydraulic

i have the same problem i have an 89 accord it started of suttle at first then has become a real problem,

Clutch release noise

If you hear a noise when you depress the clutch pedal or as you release the clutch when taking off. Lightly depress the clutch pedal and if you hear a grinding or squealing noise you may have a problem with your release bearing or your clutch assembly.
Check Release bearing
Check clutch assembly for wear. Replace as necessary.

Clutch insufficiently releasing

This will be apparent by extra effort required to shift gears and or 1st gear impossible to select when wanting to take off.
Low fluid level in clutch master cylinder. Leaks or air in hydraulic system.(my system has a clutch cable)
Seized or leaking master/slave cylinder or hoses/connections.
Or broken or seized clutch cable in mechanically actuated clutch systems
Excessive clutch pedal free travel
Warped clutch plate
Rectify as necessary

Clutch Grab


The clutch will not be smooth and sharply engage when you release the clutch pedal.
Check for broken, damaged or loose engine mounts first
Deteriorated master or slave clutch cylinder (if Fitted) or binding cable in mechanical clutch systems.
If not engine mounts replace clutch plate assembly and thrust bearing, machine the flywheel and check/replace all relevant oil seals.
