And or be sure it is not too tight

 

I just remembered that the first time I put the balancer belt back, I misaligned the oil pump pulley, and I drove it about 40 miles. The car was very noisy at above 2000 rpm and vibrated. I went back and got the oil pulley aligned. The car is little less noise and a lot less vibration.

Question is since I misaligned the oil pump on the first try, will any engine component get damaged? And will the groaning noise always there since I screwed up the 1st try? Thanks guys!

 

Damage no, vibration yes....unless you get the balance back "in time".....

The noise, sounds like, it is either due to the tensioner being "out" or the belt being too tight

Took the car apart again last week-end and found the balancer pulley was not quite at right place. Car not done yet and hope to finish within couple days. And think I'll repalce balancer if still making that noise.

 

Went ahead and replaced the timing belt tensioner and the balance shaft tensioner. Put the TB belt back and don't think it was too tight. And the car still has that noise at around 2000 rpm and above.... any more input? Thanks all.

 

you did not put the 6 mm bolt on the tensioner did you ?? ..

i would recheck the timing belt and balancer belt are properly aligned ,,

to properly adjust the t-belt and balancer belt,, once installed and the 14 mm adjuster nut is loose,, turn the engine toward the frt ( counterclock wise ) just put the crank pulley in and turn the engine by hand just to remove the slack than tighten the 14mm adjust nut ,, that is all the tension you need to put on t-belt but again make sure that there is NO bolt ( 6 mm ) on the tensioner to hold it to the block , even tho it looks like there should be 1 there

 

I didn't leave the 6mm bolt there, just used it to put timing belt on then took it off.

Well, took it apart and carefully put TB back and not that tight. And still has the same problem. So decided to take it local mechanic that did my TB 6 or 7 years ago when it was 100k miles. He drove it forward & reverse and said it's the engine mount that makes that noise. Said 3 of them are worn out... Not sure I want to tackle this now. The back mount looks like a tough one ...
