RE: headlights
Sylvania's Silverstar headlamp bulbs are theFederal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS)mandated 55 watts for low beam and 65 watts for high beam. There are aftermarket solutions available to you, including "off road use only" bulbs that are higher wattage than original equipment (OE). A wiring harness upgrade is necessary for many higher wattage replacements to prevent overload of the headlamp circuit resulting in fire hazard.
Under FMVSS No. 108 Section S7.7 (replaceable light sources), each replaceable light source for headlamps must be designed to conform to the dimensions and electrical specifications for the headlamp source it is intended to replace.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has alsoruled that thedisclaimer "off road use only"has no legal meaningsince the manufacturer, importeror retailercan notcontrol the product's use once it has been sold. Any equipment offered for salethat is covered by FMVSS No. 108 (headlamps, taillamps, side markers, etc.) must comply with the standard.
With that said, andafter having several Silverstar headlamps burn out prematurely, Hellaoffers a great aftermarket replacement that is similar in output and color to the Silverstars and they seem to be lasting longer. Advance Auto Parts carries them, and they conform toFMVSS thus they are street legal.
