help with 97 accord that engine stopped while driving

There is nothing in the distributor that can prevent the starter from spinning the engine. Get the starter working first.
You're right, stalling when you're driving is not caused by the starter. So there has to be TWO problems going on. Don't get confused between them.
Any spark that your friend saw WHILE THE ENGINE IS NOT CRANKING doesn't count. Get the starter working first.

doctor's right try to make the engine crank by hand, i was personally thinking it possibly could be electrical if engine hand cranks. check codes, may be a hit of whats going on. i paid 60 for my reader and i use it like once a week great investment. if you pop cover off from timing belt you will be able to see if belt is loose or broken etc.

If this is a manual, could be a simple as a ~$3 plastic plug? Again, I'd start with check for voltage on the small wire to the starter when trying to start, while there check the voltage on the large cable as well........before I pull the plugs, just makes it easy to spin the motor, and try to turn it over by hand.......again, my two cents.
