Default Honda accord 1998 shift smoothly now

Good day to you friends in the forum. I have honda accord 1998, automatic transmission, 4 cylinder. It was bought in 2012 ever since there has been no problem with the auto transmission shifting. But in November/December 2019 the gear started shifting erratically and then overheating occurs. Scan result shows transmission death code. Then I was still using the car to move around and the banging becomes worst. In January 2020 the car was packed at the garage, I didn't make use of it since but what I always do is I just give it little warming every two weeks and allow it warm for about 15mins. My intentions and plan was to get another gear replacement. But today making it 1 year and 5 months to my greatest surprise and amazement as I drove the car for upto 2 to 3km there was no banging or erratic shift of the auto transmission. It shift smoothly and no vibrations of any. I have already saved the money for another gear replacement. I don't understand what is happening.
Sir I need a detail explanation on this and advice or suggestion on what to do next. Is really a surprising thing. Is it possible for the gear to revert to normal after prolonged unused of the car. Or after using it for a while the erratic shifts starts again.
Please I need answers.
Thanks

I don't have an explanation.

But cars & transmissions don't heal by themselves. So my bet is that the problem will come back when you start driving it more.

Thanks for the reply, I will do the scanning next week, as at previously, months back when I use to drive it, I noticed the erratic shift occurs whenever the outside temperatures is high also the D4 light doesn't blink. What I think is, the problem could be minor but is there not yet detected. I will do the needful next week.
Thanks

Sir what I am thinking is that they could be some internal leakage or pressure loss once the fluids get hot. The slippage occurs in high temperatures after driving in hot weather but under cold conditions it shift smoothly.
I will send the codes today. Please reply

Good day to you all in the forum. We were able to perform the scan and the results is as follows: P1491, P0141. No results for transmission failures which I and my colleagues were expecting. I discussed with my mechanic that I only experience the erratic shifts only after prolong driving under high temperatures as at 2019. Although presently , I am driving it now no slippage. The mechanic suggest we remove the thermostat which we have done. Because we believe the cooling system is not functioning properly. Here in Nigeria the temperatures is very high. Also I will make a replacement of the tranny fluids and do some flushing.
Let hope things will turn around normally.
Hoping to hear from you

Removing the thermostat might not be a good idea. It's not a simple on/off valve like some cars. It directs the coolant to the radiator vs. directly back to the engine. If you suspect the thermostat is bad, it's better to get a new one. If none is installed, the coolant might just circulate right back to the engine without going to the radiator.

Good morning sir, please where is the gear pump located, I have a gear specialist that is coming to assess the auto transmission workability. When the car gets to a speed bumps and after passing over it and I want to accelerates, there is a hard shift and it bangs and then stop and shift smoothly. It shifts very well when taking off early in the morning. Is the gear pump located inside or somewhere we can easily get assess to it?. Please kindly reply as I wait your response.
Thanks.
NOTE: I am replacing back the thermostat I removed initially
