Honda Accord 2000 - Engine Code P1739
Hi,
I went to buy a used car from a private seller today and when I got the engine checked, there was a code P1739 displayed. The car has 141k miles on it and is a Honda Accord 2000. I am getting it at a decent price so I told them I would think about taking it if they can get that fixed (the car has a transmission warranty of 7 years or 100k miles that they obtained when the car had 82k miles on it). They agreed to it and we are going to the dealer together.
I am not understanding if this is a minor problem that can be fixed or a major problem that is warning me to stay away from this car. The car looks well maintained and the oil was changed regularly every 3 months so the general maintenance looks good to me but I might be wrong. Can someone advice me on this please?

That code is for the 3rd clutch switch.
The 6th generation accords (98-02) have had a lot of transmissions fail due a design flaw. I think that a bearing in there would break apart and clog the fluid passages.
From a quick search, this P1739 might be a sign that the transmission is failing. The warranty will expire in 40K miles, so keep that in mind.
If the dealership agrees to replace the transmission with a rebuilt one, then that will help. See if they will warranty the replacement transmission.

best advice i can give you...........spend 70-80 dollars and have the car inspected by a shop that specializes on Hondas or a Honda dealer ,, and tell them about the chk engine lite being on.ask them to do a buyer's inspection
P1739 is a transmission code ,,,,I would not buy the car till you know for sure what the issue is ..About the tranny having a 7 yrs or 100k miles warranty ,, did you actually see the warranty paper and the name of the shop that performed the job???

Are you sure that the warranty isn't 7years/100K from original purchase date. That would mean that the warranty ran out sometime around 2007. Those accords had a warranty extension (trans only) on them until 105K miles and 7 years 9months from original purchase date. Even with honda certified cars it is always from the original "in service" which starts the day the car is originally sold.

@deserthonda:
I saw the warranty papers. The place is called: Windy City Honda located at S. Pulaski Road in Chicago. It says that the tranny was replaced when the car had 81k miles on it. And then it had a note saying: "7 years or 100k miles". So I thought it was a warranty from the date of replacement.
Thank You for that.. So I will do the following in that case:
1. Take it to Pepboys to get a buyer's inspection
2. Check with the dealer if the warranty covers even now or if it has already expired.
3. Ask for a transmission replacement and verify if the dealer would give another warranty.
Thanks again... at least now I won't take any hasty step...
Added that that, I am taking the owner to the dealer as well, so if they say there is no more warranty I will ask the owner to replace it (which I highly doubt that he will...) or I'll pass the deal. Here's a carfax report that made me think it was a great car:

I have been to honda dealer, I was given two more codes 91737 and p0700 which i was told that they are also simalar to p1739. he told me the transmiiion is good, however third switch has to be chngd, that it would cost me abt $250 to get it done, rigt now i am getting buyers inspection done at pepboys, as there are no major problems i am not sure how long the car would survive. Dealers say car is fine but i am not sure about it please advice me in this regard.

I don't know those specific codes for the 2000, but it sounds like the transmission is on its way out.
Unless Honda will replace the transmission under the previous warranty, then I would not buy this car.
