I dont know who installed the engine before my friend bought it. Before the distributor and IAC it was doing the same thing but not as extreme.

timing set at
Valves (top pully) was set to the pully where it says up in the up position
with the notches on the side level with the top of the engine
Oil pump lined up with the arrow on the shaft to the arrow on the block.
the cam balancer lined up with the no in the side of it with the line etched
in the block.
the piston lined up with the make on the timing to pointing up at with the mark on the block.

I dont remember seeing a ground there but I will look for it. the car ran great after we changed the thermostat. for a couple of weeks.

it might have some vacuum leaks it was running without the hose hose (forgot the name of it) that goes to the top of the valve cover. he had that replaced by his friend when he had it looked at, at a shop. it didnt help the problem. but there could very well be some leaks.

I would take some sort of brake cleaner or engine cleaner and spray it everywhere there is a seam with a gasket on the engine. Everywhere. Even the spots you dont think have any problems. While the engine is running and you are doing this, if it bogs down or shuts off while you spray a certain seam then there is a vacuum leak in that seem.
