Identifying the 2002 Transmission issues
I have a 2002 Accord SE 4-cyl with 66,000 miles on it. I've recently seen some strange behavior in it, and wondering if this is part of the infamous tranny problem.
When I'm driving aggressively (hard stops followed by hard accelleration) I'm getting a significant lag between hitting the gas and the car starting forward motion. It's like the whole thing bogs down for a few seconds and then it starts accellerating. This is a new behavior. The RPMs don't rev higher, so it's not like the tranny is slipping, but its more like it's having trouble getting into first gear.
Second is also under heavier than normal accelleration. There's a significant lag between the shift from first to second and sometimes from second to third. When it shifts, again the RPMs don't rev, rather the entire car bogs down almost like engine braking, and then it shifts and I start accellerating again. Again, this is new behavior (I've had the car a year, it's CPO from the dealer.)
I've seen other posts that say the problem is the transmission slipping, but I'm wondering if this is also a symptom of the tranny failing, or if it is something else.
Thanks,
Bob

RE: Identifying the 2002 Transmission issues
all 1998-02 accords are affected by these potential problems
1. Differential bearings
2. 2nd gear clutch pack gets nuked due to main filter getting clogged for some reason suh as #1 above
2002 are supposidly fixed but logic suggests that they are not truly fixed

RE: Identifying the 2002 Transmission issues
I have a 2002 Accord SE, 4 cyl 5 speed - 50 000kms
I have a problem with the shifting itself...My shifts into 1st, and from 1st to second both feel and sound rough as hell, 2nd to 3rd is smooth as can be. Also, physically, I can hear a creaking when I shift into either 1st or 2nd, it sounds like whatever the shift rod rests against while in gear is broken or msiplaced or something...I'm not exactly a mechanic as you probably can tell, but does this have to do with the shift gate or anything? Could honda have actually put in plastics or easily breakable parts in such an important, obscure place in the car?
thanks for any help...I've had this car for 2 months now, and if I can't fix all this little annoying creaks and rattles I may just sell it.
