Incorrect Timing Symptoms
Good morning everyone. I have a quick question regarding timing. My car has been running horribly for a little while now. I've posted another thread about how my car's been hesitating and basically feels like it's backfiring (link below). The code that's surfaced is a P0171 (system too lean). I've been told common problems for this are O2 Sensor, EGR Valve, MAP Sensor, Fuel Pump problems. I've also been told to check spark plugs for inconsistencies and fouling.
I've replaced the following parts : EGR Valve, MAP Sensor, front O2 Sensor, Fuel Pressure Regulator
I've had the fuel pump pressure checked (at the pump, not at the engine - they couldn't get the right adapter to check right at the fuel rail), but the fuel pressure was fine right at the pump. All the spark plugs are fairly new and are very good - not fouled.
In order to get past the engine dying right down while rolling away in 1st is to keep the revs really high. It's a real struggle to make it through intersections sometimes if you forget to rev the heck out of it.
I have a fuel pressure regulator on the way that I'll replace shortly, but I was wondering if any of these symptoms would lead anyone to believe there's a timing issue. Like I said, it'll respond when you keep the revs high, but in low revs / normal driving shifts, it'll die right down, almost feels like it floods itself until you kinda feather the pedal and it'll slowly pick up and take off.
Timing / VTEC Problems potentially?

RE: Incorrect Timing Symptoms
A couple of things i would like to suggest
# 1 and foremost.... STOP replacing parts and throwing money away ,, you need to properly DIAGNOSE the issue
#2 .. you got to chk fuel pressure at the rail ( engine ) if pressure is too low,, could be a bad fuel pump or the screen ( filter) could be plugged
if pressure is too high .. could be a bad fuel pressure regulator
# 3 .. i would also chk the valve clearance ..
# 4 ,,..chk the EVAP canister purge valve .. from the int manifold side.. get a vacc pump and aplly vacc ,, if it does not hold vacc replace the valve ,( valve is located on manifold befhing valve cover gasker, in frt of accell cable brackets ,rt side of PCV valve .
# 4 .. if all those are ok you need to chk the fuel injectors ...
And on the final note .......parts that you replaced already includes a FUEL pressure regulator but you also say that you have 1 on the way and you will replace shortly...
Did you replace it or not ??

RE: Incorrect Timing Symptoms
Oops, no, didn't replace the fuel pressure regulator yet.....should be here tomorrow. I'll throw it in, since it's on the way and if that doesn't get 'er done, I'll carry on with your suggestions. Thank you very much for your help.

RE: Incorrect Timing Symptoms
Check the cone shaped fuel screen located inthe fuel rail. If this screen is clogged, most likely the fuel pump is coming apart.
A few years ago we had a '98 model Accord with similar symptoms. After coming in to our Service Department twice in a monthwith debris in this filter screen, we replaced the fuel pump, which was obviously coming apart.
Incidently, if this is the issue, itwill cause high fuel pressure at the rail, not low pressure.
Sincerely,
Ed Brian
