Default intermittent temp guage - sputtering

I tried to post earlier, but the cookies on my PC screwed it up and I don't see that it went through. If it did and I missed it, I apologize.

Let me start off by saying I've read a ton of posts already and learned so much. Thank you!

I have a 1994 Accord EX, V-tec, 5 speed with 265,000 miles. My temp guage works sometimes, but most of the time not. The car also sputters at cruising speeds and the idle fluctuates between 2,100 and down to 500 RPMs at red lights. Sometimes it stalls completely. There are no check engine lights.

Ihave done a tune up,(cap, rotor, wires, NGK plugs - old plugs looked good, just worn)and it solved the problem for about 3 weeks, but now it's doing it again. I got suckered into the "throttle body cleaning service" at a quick oil place, but I think this weekend I'll go through all of that stuff myself based on the 15 or so threads I'll have printed out and will have on my bench this weekend. I plan on doing the EGR cleaning as per Hondadude's instructions andIACV and FITV too if I can. I also want to make sure and bleed the coolant system too now that I learned how to do that.

My question is, since a lot of the posts seem to show a relationship between the coolant and the sputtering/erratic idle, do you guys think this is related to my temp guage problem, or is that just another problem in and of itself?

Thanks!

Default RE: intermittent temp guage - sputtering

The temp gauge is a circuit all to itself, the sender only sends to the gauge, there is a different sensor that feeds the computer temp info.

In the area of the T-stat housing [lower rad hose goes to T-stat], you will find a single Yellow/greenwire connected to the temp sending unit. You can ground that wire and then go turn on the key and the temp gauge should start to rise; DON"T let it peg out.
This testshould help you figure out if the gauge is the problem or the sensor has lost it's mind.
