Default Maintenance for my 2000 accord V6

Hello Everyone,

I have a 2000 Accord V6 and I am thinking about getting a maintenance soon, by the way it has 100k on it. I would like to know what kind of common tasks should the mechnic perform on my car.

Thank you,

Derek

At 100K, your timing belt might be due. Check your owner's manual first. 5th gen accords were to be changed at 90K miles, but not sure about the 6th gen.

Check tire tread, rotate tires, check brake pads, check fluid levels. Change oil/filter. Replace tranny fluid (do not have them flush the tranny).

These are things that you can do yourself to save some money.

Spark plugs, distributor cap/rotor (if you have them), air filter, cabin air filter.

Timing belt on the 6th gens is 105k or 7 years, whichever comes first. I didn't see that on desert's thread so I thought I'd throw it in. You might as well have them replace the water pump & seals when they do the t-belt too, since they are already in there.

dlee: please fix your signature

I have the same year/engine. I'm at 87k so I'm changing things for the big 100 also. In addition to what has been mentioned, I am replacing all of the rubber hoses with silicone except the special ones (ie - fuel lines, AC rubber sections, power steering lines). I'm also going with stainless steel braided brake lines. With the radiator hoses, I will flush the coolant 3 times with 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 distilled water and fill with Peak 150,000 mile coolant. With the brake hoses, I will blead out all of the old brake fluid and replace with new. I had the tranny fluid cahnged about a year ago, but I may do it again since I don't know if they did any more than a simple change which accounts for only a third of the fluid. I want it all changed! I'm also thinking about adding a tranny cooler to protect the weakest part of the car (people say that it helps get quicker shifts too .... idk).

In your V6 I think you can access the trans drain plug without even jacking up the car. Just drain, refill, drive the car a while, then repeat 2 more times. Voila! New trans fluid. You are correct a simple drain & refill only changes out 1/3 of the fluid...hence why you gotta do it 3 times.

I have a plug?!? I never actually looked when I've had it in the air. I had just assumed that the pan had to be dropped and I didn't want to do that without a lift of my own.

My only problem with the 3 change method is that the new fluid mixes with twice as much old, so you never really get all of the crap out. Is there any way to fully change the fluid that gets all of the old crap out? The 3 change method leaves the fluid 29.6% contaminated, my goal is zero. The math is easy: start with 100% contaminated and multiply by 2/3 three times. This assumes that the fluid in the pan is actually 1/3 of the total, but I'm sure that you see my point.

I certainly understand what you're saying about diluting the fluid - endlesslessly...

But there's a lot of anecdotalevidence that'power-flushing' is not good for Honda trannys. Various explanations, varying levels of credibility, but still...be aware that it isn't recommended.

Possibly part of the issue is that some commercial tranny-flushing machines use solvents along withgeneric ATF. There seems to be something special about genuine Honda ATF.

There's no other way? Possibly draining the fluid and running it slowly on the lift to get more in the pan? Just an idea.
