Default NEED HELP: What motors can swap into a 98 Accord LX??!!

My buddy just blew his motor in his 98 Accord LX (The F23 Motor, 4cyl 2.3L 150hp Vtec) and he needs a new motor..

What Honda motors can be swapped into this car fairly easily without complications and does anyone know of any good places online to possibly buy a motor from? Thanks for the help.

any f22(except f22c obviously) will fit, h22 and h23 will work. however if its not a obd2 it will be trouble come inspection

When you say "obd2" what exactly do you mean? And are you saying that the engines you listed will "easily" be able to swap into the car, and when I say easily I mean "plug and play" no drivetrain / tranny problems, no kinks to work out, no additional costs beyond dropping the motor in and getting it going.. thanks.

OBD II means that the engine control unit (ECU) codes is standardized on all cars. They all have the same 16 pin connector so Autozone can read error codes with the same connection. OBD II was required in all cars produced starting in 1996. There are some differences in where the sensors are located (like the crank position sensor is in a different place in the OBD I accord vs the OBDII) and the connection to the ECU.

The F22 (94-97 accords) were either OBD I (94-95) or OBD II (96-97). I think that all H22 are OBD I and H23 are OBD II.

If you don't want to worry about problems with wire harnesses, etc, just get the same F23 motor that blew (98-02 accords). You said that it is an LX and it is a vtec. I think that the vtec motor was only available in the EX (at least through the 97 accords).

1. Alright so lets see if I understand... He can put in pretty much any F2X series motor, except for the F23C? (He doesn't care about the HP, so it doesn't matter if it's the slower 4 Cyl from an older Accord, doesn't matter as long as it will make the car run fine).

2. Wikipedia says this "The 1998 Honda Odyssey and the 1998-1999 Isuzu Oasis used the F23A7 engine, which was substantially similar to the F23A1."
Does this mean that he could drop in an F23A7 and be just fine?

He can drop in anything with an F or H infront of it. Except the F20/22C from the S2000. But from what it sounds like he should just stick to swapping in another F23. Anything else for him seems like it'll be more work than what he wants. Especially since he just wants to get it running and doesn't care about HP.

agreed, the h22 and h23 will require additional work like wiring harness and motor mounts to name a few. and the f22 was offered as OBD2(as it is in the 96 and 97 accord) and the h22 also came as OBD2(H22A4)
