Default new guy here w/ Auto Trans Problem

hi everyone:

i'm brand new here. i'm grateful i found this site. i need help with my car.

i am in my 40s and disabled. money is tight. therefore, i try to work on my car myself.

i own a 1991 accord DX sedan with a 2.2 liter engine and an automatic transmission. i am having a problem with the shifting of the transmission and another with the fast idle. i wonder if the two are related.

i use public computers and my time on them is limited. so, i'll give a full explanation of my car problems as soon as i can.

my accord has only 130,000 miles on it. it had 52,000 miles when i bought it. due to my disability i only drive about 7-8000 miles/year. it's my only car.

i bought it back in the winter of '98 and it has ran well thus far. this transmission problem is the only major trouble it's given me.

that's all for now folks. thanks for reading this.

Moved your post for more exposure.

Is the Check Engine Light on? Even if not, suggest checking for trans code by shorting the service check connector under the glove box w/ a paper clip and reading the codes. Check DIY forum for help w/ obtaining codes.

Post your TCU codes and someone can help.

good luck

High idle could cause automatic transmission to have harsh engagement, could have late/harsh shifting problem. You didn't said what kind of problem with the transmission either. So it will be hard for us to diagnose the problem.

Is the D4 light on, when it shouldn't be? If the light stays on constantly (not blinking), you could have a bad computer. The computers can be repaired, sometimes. A new computer is pretty expensive. If you take the cover off the computer, and find black spots on the curcuit board, you've found the problem.

Used computers are available at very reasonable prices $25-$50.

good luck

Let's slow down just a bit. The op needs to come back and give a little more information....without any codes (op please check for these, in the DIY section there is a "how to"), then lets start with a fluid change, or two, or three if we are not sure when it was last done. Then check the throttle control cable for proper adjustment.
