Oil Filter Seat Leaking * HELP *

Oil Filter Seat Leaking * HELP *
My 1990 Accord has developed an Oil Leak at the Oil Filter. I think the last filter I installed
was either installed to tightly, or somehow scored the surface where the Gasket makes contact.
I have changed the Oil in this car since 1990, and never had a problem, so I do not know what
happened specifically or how. All I know is that it is leaking. Annoyingy so, dripping onto the
exhaust pipes, and can smell it inside the car when stopped.
Here is my question .....
Does anyone know if the surfaced can be smoothed somehow ??? Sand paper / Steel Whool, ??? ??
I plan on buying a new 2008 this fall, but do not want to be smelling burning oil until then.
Any help or ideas greatly appreciated !!!!!
thanks in advance

RE: Oil Filter Seat Leaking * HELP *
are you sure that it is leaking from where the oil filter gasket makes contact ?? ?? it could be from the oil filter housing seal ,, have you checked that possibility out ?? Have you removed the filter and checked it out ?? To be honest with you, i have never heard or seen of a scored oil filter base ..

yes I did remove the filter and changed the oil ... I do not know anythig about the
"oil filter housing seal". I actually did not see any obviuos damage to the surface.
Is the oil filter housing seal difficult ti replace ? It is possible that your idea could be
the pronlem. I'll dig out my book and have a look ...... thanks

no the oil pump is located under the timing cover its the oil pressure sending unit hes talking about. you you lubricate the gasket on the oil filter before installing it? that will cause an oil leak from the filter if you dont do that. also make it damn near impossible to remove.

Also look at the oil rubber seal on the old filter to make sure all of the rubber came off and a piece of it is not sticking on the oil housing ..

Thanks for the info on the Sending unit.
I do not know what a "Oil Filter Housing Seal" is ...... is this the seal on the oil filter ? Or is this
something that is on the car even when the oil Filter is off of the car.
Is changing the Oil Pressure Sending Unit or the "Oil Filter Housing Seal (?) " a big job ??
How much do you think the dealer would charge.
I do not know yet, but I have a feeling it is the Senidng Unit.
THANKS!
