Default Old Man needs help fast

I am 64 and losing the little patience I have fast. I have read lots of threads and tried NOT to start a new one but I am desperate.

I have a '92 Accord EX with 165,000 miles. It looks like new and I have only had this problem for the last 2500 miles but I am afraid to drive it far from home. The problem is the engine rapidly dies at any speed. Looks like an electrical problem that cuts off the fuel inj. The car is a stick but will not restart by dragging the clutch when it is coasting. Only using the key will it restart. Been towed twice so it does NOT always restart.

Replaced the ignition module, same problem a week later. Replaced the main relay no difference. Replaced the ignition switch. I am ready to change the driver very soon.

What am I missing here?

I had a similar problem w/ 94 EX. It would die when hard braking occurred, but would restart nearly as soon as stopped. I replaced Main Fuel Relay twice before finally determining that fuel pump was "sticking". Difficult to diagnose, but when no-start occurs try "hammering" the ignition on/off/on,... and see if pump will eventually start. You should hear the pump kick-on and run for 2-3 secs, then cut off. I found when I heard the pump, starting was assured. A new fuel pump fixed the problem.

good luck

You need to figure out if you are losing spark or fuel when the car stalls and/or will not start.

When you turn the key to the II position and not try to start the car, do you hear the fuel pump prime for ~2 seconds while the check engine light is turned on? It is a faint buzzing/whirling sound that comes from the back seat, so listen carefully.

Also, have you check for ECU codes? See thread called How to Get CEL codes in the DIY section.

How are the maintenance items, like distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs? Do you use the NGK V-Power plugs suggested in the owner's manual?

When driving at 55 mph, the tach just goes to zero instantly with no stuttering or warning. It just quits. It might have run perfectly for 4 days and then whan dies. I drive 100 miles per day so it is a big concern. I do not have NGK plugs but that should not be an issue since it runs fine 95% of the time. That would not cause it to die.

could be ignition coil or ignitor. This could be difficult to test as the car runs most of the time. You could check for excesive resistance in coil. Most test I know of require the problem existing at time of test. Good luck

Anyone else have any ideas?

I am somewhat disabled and also have a hearing loss so I will have to have someone else try to listen for the fuel pump kick in at ignition actuation.

This is real sad as I love Honda's but cannot afford to get stranded in the bad neighborhoods where I have to work.

Did you check for engine codes?
