p1456 check engine not clearing on its own
1996 v6 accord 4dr automatic EX
~100k miles
Hi Guys,
I recently bought myself an OBD2 device so i was actually pretty psyched when my check engine light came on the other day. I am 99% sure that the light came on because i was an idiot and didn't tighten my gas cap last time i filled up. Sure enough i got the P1456 code and my gas cap was indeed loose. The problem is, it hasn't turned itself off. I know I can just reset the light and see if it comes back, but it has been well over a week and I have put over 200 miles on the car since.
I have always reset my own lights on this car, so i'm not certain, but i thought they turn off on their own after 100 miles and at least 5 or 6 turn overs?
I know this code could mean any number of evap problems like an air leak or reduced egr airflow but i definitely didn't tighten the cap all the way so it seems to me that is the most obvious culprit.
any thoughts?
thanks!
brian

I don't know for fact, but suspect the ECU monitors the performance over a number of restarts before resetting the CEL off. Manuals never provide this detail, so speculation. I've read of others having evap code persists after repairs.
I would reset and see if code comes back. If there's another problem besides the cap, it should appear quickly.
good luck

Check this.

It's for 2003-2006 and I bet 1996 ECU is less sophisticated. But still, it might not be as simple as miles & how many starts. The ECU only tests the EVAP system during certain conditions, and you may not have spent enough time at that particular condition.
