Default Power Drivers seat Question

OK it's a 98 Accord ex with 4cyl auto trans, 2dr coupe.

Here is what I have, the drivers seat fore and aft only works on the passengers side seat rail. The drivers side seat rail doesn't move. I've take the seat completely out of the car to determine if there was a jam, no jam.

I Noticed that the passengers side seat rail has the drive motor, but there is no motor on the drivers side rail. It would appear that there is maybe a shaft missing to turn the drivers side rail. But I'm not sure it's speculation on my part. I believe that this is something that I might find at a junk yard but thought I would ask here first. Additionally if anyone has an exploded view of the 8 way power drivers seat that would be outstanding.

THis doesn't really break it down much - seems like the whole assembly is one "part".

Default Power seat

Jim,

It actually does help, it appears that my first thought was right. There is a Torque shaft that is missing from the motor on the passengers side seat rail to the drivers side seat rail.

I like the fact that it gives item numbers for all the hardware and not for the motors and shafts.... But it does confirm what I needed to know. Sorry for such a simple question... thank you very much for the assistance!

The item numbers just indicate parts that are available from dealer. It only breaks em out where you can buy individual parts.

www dot hondaautomotiveparts dot com
click PARTS
put in your car's information
select FRONT SEAT or something like that

Lots of places have the same pictures, so I bet they're from Honda's electronic parts catalog.

My 1998 Accord EX has a bad seat back recliner motor, and the dealer says motors aren't available individually as spares. One must buy the entire seat pan assembly. Replacement at the dealership is quoted at about $1000. Ouch! Looks like it's time to contact salvage yards.

You might remove that assembly & look to see what's broken. Maybe some wiring that you can splice together? Find a motor someplace else like a hobby shop?

Salvage yard assembly might have a different broken motor, so maybe you can cannabilize parts to make yours work?

The motors used in power seats are far heftier than anything you're likely to find at a hobby shop. In fact, of the examples that I've seen, they appear to be purpose-built. They have an integral PolySwitch device in the housing in series with the armature to protect the motor and cut the current to a trickle when the motor stalls at the end of its mechanical travel, a feature that I've never seen in other DC motors. Moreover, there are countless mechanical styles in motors, so finding a suitable replacement anywhere except the dealer's parts counter or a salvage yard is extremely improbable. Seat motors don't actually run very much over the life of a vehicle, so the likelihood of getting good parts out of a scrapped seat assembly is very high.

Phil, I had to break down and buy a seat from a junkyard. Because as you have stated they want you to buy the entire seat pan. I have also found that for some reason people like the Honda seats. Most of the ones I could find were manual seats. I did find a power seat and paid good money for it. Put it in the car and the Recline DIDN'T work. So I changed the switch pack from the old one to the new one, no joy there either, so i then changed the recline motor, ha, still no help. Swapped the harness from my old seat to the new seat. It all works now. It looks like the seat motors are all the same under the seat. I still have the old seat and the motors... they worked. Send me some contact info if you need a motor. Mine was also a 98. Good luck!

Default Suddenly Now!

I just had my mechanic work for 4 hours to get my drivers side door open, it was latched shut for 10 days. It was a really tough job and he had to remove my perfect functioning power seat, so he could get in there to remove the panel etc.

Job well done, door finally was released mainly with muscle and tearing the latch and actuator to shreds. All new locking system is working now.

He puts the seat back, bolts it down and now it won't move back and forth on the rails equally! Why would this suddenly happen? He put my seat in so I could get home, but it's crooked, and sits way too forward, my knees are nearly touching the dash. I've been reading here and this can't be my next nightmare!

Could it just be something simple? It has never given me a problem, it came out out of the car easily for him. I feel weary, I just don't know what to do now. He's coming again tomorrow to see if he can get it working correctly. When he was tryng to move it back and forth we both could see the outside rail not letting that side move, and could hear the motor making a noise because of the sticking rail. Any ideas besides junk yards or Honda? As I said it was perfect until this day. 98 EX V6 2Door Coupe
