Default Power Steering Noise

my car makes a whining noise when i accelerate and turn the steering wheel. i only hear this noise when it is cool/cold outside. now that it's getting cooler here in Houston i hear this pretty much every time i start the car. the noise goes away after the car warms up and after i have driven a few miles. it is also harder to turn the steering wheel than it used to be. what needs to be done to correct this? just went over 100,000 miles.

If fluid level is good, suggest trying a fluid change. Perhaps fluid has "thickned" w/ time.

Sometimes a little air can get into the system, and cause noise. As you continue to drive, the small leak seals and air is circulated out. A leak allowing air to enter would have to be on the suction line from reservoir to pump. You may see an external leak when system is shut down. Bubbles should be noticeable in the reservoir when whining is occuring.

good luck

This should solve your problem. I fixed mine right up. Took about 5 minutes.

I'm having the exact same problem. Going to replace the o-ring next week; thanks for posting the fix!

Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the bolt, a ratchet didn't fit in the small space available. When you get the o-ring from the dealership, they should give you a revised (orange) o-ring (it looks a little thicker than the original). Take the bolt out, then twist and pull the fitting out of the pump. Hold the hose up, and you shouldn't loose much fluid. You will probably have to dig the old o-ring out of the groove in the pump. Coat the new o-ring with fluid then put it on the hose fitting and reassemble. Good luck. It would have taken less than 10 minutes, but I replaced the old fluid in the resevoir with new Honda flluid.
