To pull or not to pull engine for clutch/engine work. '88 LXi

I wouldn't worry with it, I think it is the way the gear is "cut" that makes it a bit lounder than the others.
While out and doing all of this, it wouldn't hurt to change the fluid in it. In the 3rd gen's I've always used regular motor oil in the manual trans.

Flywheel resurface done, was able to get the bushing back in place.
Before I put trans back in, a question about it: For as long as I remember, the trans emitted a strange sound when in reverse. Like an enhanced gear whine. Above and beyond the normal gear whine. Wondering if this is common and not to worry, or should I open up the trans and investigate?

Main shaft damage
After much thought I decided to pull apart the transaxle to check out the noise when in reverse. Regrettably, there is damage to the main shaft and corresponding gear on the counter. It seems the mainshaft is no longer available from Honda. Plus, the asking price was in the $250 range. Frankly, even if it were available, I wouldn't spend that much, as gears 1-5 work fine with no noise. But, if I could get it cheaper, I might. Any ideas?
