Default Puzzling speedometer boards

In the attached picture, you'll see two boards that look just about the same (to me at least). The one on the top is from my car, and it periodically does not work. The one on the bottom looks the same, and I just pulled it from another 96 Accord, but a 4cyl model (whereas mine is 6). Should these boards be the same? I don't get why they would use two different chips between the 4 and the 6... I got this replacement for only a couple bucks at pull-a-part so it's not a big deal, I was just hoping to finally have a consistent speedometer.

Also, I thought I read somewhere about somebody fixing the sporadic speedometer by doing something with soldier joints, but looking for it now I can't find it. Is something like that possible if these boards aren't compatible?

Thanks in advance!

There are different boards for the automatic and manual transmission, because the MT accord does not need the D2,D3,D4,N,R,P on there.

If they both came off of an automatic, then they will work (actually, the MT and AT boards will both work).

What is happening with the speedometer? Is it staying stuck at ~19mph?

It should have been the automatic. To be honest I didn't even look at the shifter on the car I was pulling it from..

But yeah, it kinda stays around there... What happens is as I accelerate, it moves up and down, between I guess 15 and 25 possibly, and as I speed up the oscillation gets smaller till it's not visibly moving, right around 20ish. It's almost as if a sin or cos is reversed somewhere, but the pins match up.

EDIT: I should mention, the VSS is rather new, replaced a few years ago when I thought that might be the problem with the speedometer. It didn't change anything.

My 95 accord had this problem, and I sent just the speedometer to a placed I found online to get fixed. Once it was returned, I never had a problem.

That would indicate that the small board on the speedometer is the problem. Take a close look for cracked solder joints (this is what I suspect the problem is). Also check were the speedometer board makes a connection with the board that you purchased to ensure there is no corrosion where those two items make contact.

Well, I figured it's nearly impossible to see a cracked solder joint on joints so small, so I just took my iron to all the joints on the board heh. I also cleaned the contacts where it connects to the speedometer, since they were a bit dirty as well. It worked so far on a short test drive around town, so I'm going to hope it worked for good!

Thanks for your help!
