Default Radio Install Help

I finally got my gen 3 running pretty nice and want to put an aftermarket unit in since it came with no radio. I've put in quite a few head units in my time but, if you look at the pictures, I can't for the life of me figure out where/or to what to mount the unit.

One more question, if you look at the picture you'll see that I outlined 3 wire, the black wire (circled in grey) is obviously the ground but both of the other wires (white/yellow and yellow/red) are hot with or without the key being in the ACC/On position. Shouldn't only 1 wire be hot all the time and the other only when the key is turned??

Thanks in advance!!

WHT/YEL is hot at all times. The YEL/RED is hot from the ign switch.?? Unless someone has done something at the 10amp fuse. The BLK/RED should be from the "lights".

Mine has one of those "metal" sleeves in the opening that the radio then slides into.

Thumbs up

I just replaced my factory radio 3 weeks ago with an new CD/Head unit. The new model radios slide into a metal chassis that you must first wire into the factory loom.I had to buy a wiring loom adapter, chassis and bezel trim kit ( about $60) After much fiddling and many choice words later, it worked, but sounded awful. Turns out the rear deck speakers were completely rotted from sun, and I replace them with Sony 4 way coaxial XPLOD 6 1/2" speakers. It sounds really good, now I need to get brave and remove/replace the front speakers in the doors.

poorman, as usual you know your gen 3's!! I'll look into why the yel/red is constant hot. Not quite sure what the "blk/red from the lights" is for but I see it in the FSM, do you happen to know what it's used for?

bigpat, the front door speakers are a piece of cake! You don't have to take the door panel off, just the speaker grill. If you're working on a gen 3, 3 screws to get the grill off and 3 screws to get the speaker out!!

Thanks guys!

The blk/red is for when you turn on your headlights...can't remember if it is power or not, I think so. Whatever radio you get might have an input for that, that is why I mentioned it. It dim's some lights or makes them brighter on the radio at night while driving.....Also if you need the +/- by speaker (LF/RF/LR/RR) let me know.

Yes, I like the 3rd gens.....got my first one (86 DX 5 spd) back in the early 90's. Had an 81 2dr hatch and an 85 4dr as well.......

I wish it was that simple...My 1993 is a gen 4...No visible screws to remove from the speaker grills. It appears they are screwed in thru the back of the door panel, so I will need to remove them to get to the speakers in the actual door. Any other gen 4 owners out there have any experience in replacing the front speakers ? Are they 6.5" ??

Yes, they are 6.5s. There is a factory bracket that you will probably have to mod w/ a dremel tool or a hacksaw in order to fit a speaker with bigger (deeper) magnets. But it is really easy. I have a PDF for install I can email you if you like.
