Rattle in front end?

Rattle in front end?
This time my problem is with my 2002 Civic EX. If that's not allowed on the Accord forum, where might I be able to find Civic help?
There is a rattle or soft knocking on the driver's side of the front end. Most pronounced when it is idling in-gear with my foot on the brake. Some related single "pops" when starting or stopping.
Everything that I can put a hand on seems tight. The belt is tight. The car has about 84,000 miles on it.
I seem to remember my '88 Accord having a rattle when the CV joints needed replacing, but I thought that noise was when it was cornering.
Any thoughts?

For the pops when starting or stopping, is that occurring right when you press on the brake pedal?
If so, that could be the brake pedal position switch. The switch plunger doesn’t fit squarely into the switch casing. When you press the brake pedal, the plunger rubs the side of the casing and makes noise. It can be adjusted. See attached image.
Even if the pop is related to the switch plunger, the rattle/soft knocking may be something else.

Thanks for responding! I wasn't clear on my description of the "pops". They are more like a single-event version of the rattle. Same noise, same area -- just not a continuous rattle. It's definitely coming from the driver's side of the front end / engine compartment.
