My neighbor looked and said that my water pump is bad because that's where all the liquid leaked from. It's on the right side. Not under the radiator. Can anyone tell me how much it will cost to get it fixed? It's a 1994 Honda Accord. I'm a single mom barely scraping by so I need to get it fixed as inexpensive as possible. I am afraid to take it somewhere that is going to rip me off.

Water pump is on the left side of the car, so on the right when youre standing in front facing the engine. Near the drive belts but a little bit back further. Is that where it leaks out?

Unfortunately its gonna be expensive because the timing belt has to come off to get at the water pump. Thats a big job.

Your profile says Escondido, Cawhich is a couple thousand miles away from ME. Hopefully someone around here knows of a GOOD shop in that area.

If you are standing facing the engine it is on the right side kind of towards the back.

I forgot to tell you that my nice neighbor replaced a sensor in my car so now the temperature gauge in the car works but it goes all the way to the red if I drive less than a mile. The fans still do not turn on.

Yeah, thats where thewaterpump is.

How many miles on the car? You might be due for a new timing belt anyway. Not that its inexpensive, but the timing belt and waterpump are 2 jobs that just naturally go together. You have todismantle allthe samestuff to get at them both. Since you have to replace the waterpump, it would be silly to put the old timing belt back on.

If the timing belt breaks, its really REALLY bad news because the pistons can hit the valves.

Im gonna change the thread title to see if it attracts some attention for you...

Is this true even if you start from a cold engine & drive less than a mile?

yes. I work about a mile from my house and when I drove home after being at work for 8 hours the temperature gauge went all the way to the red a little ways from my house. The fans don't turn on. The temperature gauge seems to go up and down when I accelerate too.

Literallyone mile?
That makes me wonder about a blown headgasket.

Normally, with a cooling system that is FILLED, it takes longer than that for the temperature to even come to operating temperature.

I would continue checking that the radiator is actually full. Not just the overflow bottle.

A better possibility (cross your fingers) is a stuck thermostat. Perhaps along with a clogged radiator core. But it seems that would not overheat so quickly.
