starting problems when hot
hey
i got a 1998 accord ex v6 auto with a 101k
lately ive been having some problems starting when the engine is at normal running temp.
it doenst happen everytime once in a blue
the engine turns over and starts to stall
and the only way i can get it running is if i acclerate it to about 2,000 rpm and hold it for about 30 secs.
ive been to my mechanic and he has no idea what it can be
his idea is to try to change the idle or wait till something breaks
i dont really want to throw away money on something i might not even need and at the same time i dont want to breakdown on the side of the highway one day
hopefully u guys can help me

RE: starting problems when hot
Try holding the throttle wide open when you attempt a hot start. If this improves starting, fuel is leaking into the intake manifold during shutdown and flooding the engine severely, creating a difficult start.
It's likely a leaking injector or perhaps a ruptured diaphragm on the fuel pressure regulator.
I would change mechanics also. This is not rocket science but elementary auto mechanic hard-start investigation. If he can't figure this one out, what would he do w/ a really tough problem.
good luck

RE: starting problems when hot
good point on the mechanic
the thing is it never happen on a hot summer day
the problem only started in early november
and it never happened when the engine was performing a cold start
only at normal running temp.

RE: starting problems when hot
Try the wide-open throttle start procedure. If that helps excess fuel is somehow getting into the engine.
It could be something else, for sure. I didn't mean to imply this was only possibility.
good luck

RE: starting problems when hot
this problem should only affect 00 accord v6's but i have seen it on 98-02 v6's.
the hard start usually happens in winter months on unusually warm days. it's caused by the gas companies switching to a winter blend fuel. after the car warms up and you shut it off, the warmer temp increases the underhood temp just enough to boil the fuel in the rail. this causes vapor lock until you clear it by holding the rpm high for a bit. sometimes it will set a misfire code.
the fix is to replace the pcm and fuel pressure regulator on the 00 accord v6. the fuel pressure regulator increases the pressure in the fuel system and the new pcm has updated fuel maps.
since it's98 i'd lean away from that pcm/fpr udpate and start with checking fuel pressure. can you handle that on your own or get access to a fuel pressure gauge?

RE: starting problems when hot
Does the car have electronic ignition or rotor/distributor cap?
Is the starter motor clean (no oil crud or corrosion)?
Are your battery cables in good condition and tight on the battery?
Does the car idle well during most driving conditions- right after cold start, while hot, started after partial cooling period?
Are there any mods to the engine?
Texashonda is right- this is not rocket science- but diagnosing infrequent problems can be complicated when you can't show the conditions that lead to the problem.
Is the car an automatic or manual trans? A hot clutch can sometimes bog the engine on start-up.
