This past weekend my '93 Accord was broken into and my stereo (Aftermarket Alpine) was stolen. It has a removable faceplate and I had removed it (placed it in the glove box). I have stock speakers and nothing flashy about my car whatsoever. All the doors were also locked. I parked in a mall parking lot that was well lit. In addition another '92 Accord 4 spaces away was also robbed. When I and the other victim came out to our cars, the doors were unlocked and stereos gone. Both cars had the doors locked when we left them.
The police and mall security both said that the '91 to '96 Honda Accord are one of the easiest cars to break into. I am not completely sure as to how they got in either of our cars but I am suspecting they had a master type key. I say this because to get the stereo out I am pretty sure you need to move the shifter back into 1st gear.
Is there anything we can do to make our cars more difficult to break into and make it harder for someone to steal our stuff?

If you've seen some show cars they don't have any door handles on them, just do a search in google for shaved door handles accord and you'll find some kits, basically what you're doing is removing the outside lock and door handle so that only a remote will allow entry... it's probably not worth it though since it can get kinda spendy...

I have a car alarm/car starter. The cool thing is with this, is that it has a FM 2 way communicator, so if my alarm goes off, or even the warning chirps sound, I get a page on the communicator (goes right on the key chain), and I know from the pager, if it is the alarm, or just the warning. Another thing, seeing on how there is tons of room under the hood (hahahaha), the siren (142db) is mounted right behind the grill. I love it. I have never had someone try to break in (knock on wood), but people have bumped the car in parking lots, and set the warning chirps off, and I got a page. My model alarm has a 2500ft range, some others may differ. I know that most other car alarms have about half that. So I love the distance I get. When in a mall, it's great.

The brand of alarm/starter thatI have is Predator and the model number is 4901TW. The retailfor this setup is $299 CDN. That price doesn't include install. I would give you a link to it from the net, but I can't seem to find any. I know that others make these types of alarms, like Ungo, Viper etc... I love it. These alarms, like I said have double the range of a regular alarm, and you are notified. I hope that helps.

RE: Theives stealing our Accords!!! What can we do?
I had my '92 broken into in a Las Vegas parking garage on a trip a few years back. Some things were stolen. What really upset me was what was taken, not that I was broken into. They took the faceplate to my radio, just the faceplate, the coin drawer w/ $4 in change, and my ashtray. What kind of $%#*! thief steals change and an ashtray, but not the $400 digital camera in the glove box, or pop the trunk and take a $1000 amp and subs?!?
But just like you the door was unlocked but otherwise appeared not to be tampered with. I thought I had locked the door too. But I did notice that although you shouldn't be able to lock the door from the inside with it open, that occasionally you are able to push the lock down so it does look locked, but if you pull the handle on the outside it unlocks and pops right open. Could be a rare defect in the locking mechanism that manifests itself as the parts get older.
